Gold Medallist’s Inspiring Tale
The services and needs of people living with a disability were put in the spotlight on Thursday during the St Jude’s open day. St Jude’s Disability Services is a service that includes provision of group and independent living for people living with a disability.
The open day at the Crowea Street group home on Thursday, to tie in with the International Day of People with Disability, invited the community to see what the service provided. There was also a talk from gold medal Paralympian and Walpole farmer Jamie Dunross.
Mr Dunross talked about his own personal experience on how he ended up in a wheelchair and how he learned to grow and thrive.
“The theme of today is friendship, empathy of life and being there for others,” he said. “When you help others, you’re really helping yourself.”
The Crowea Street group home has eight staff who are helping people gain independence by living away from home.
The home is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the staff have a range of experience including mental health qualifications and Certificate IV in Disability Services.
